Purgatory Resort
Purgatory Resort is the San Juan Mountains' best-kept secret — 1,635 acres of varied terrain, an average of 260 inches of dry Colorado powder annually, and none of the elbow-to-elbow crowds you'll find at Vail or Breckenridge.

Purgatory trip decisions
Choose Durango charm or base-village convenience before you buy lift tickets
Stay in Durango
Best when dinners, the railroad, breweries, and a real town matter as much as skiing. Budget the US-550 morning drive honestly.
Stay at Purgatory
Best for families, lessons, short trips, and anyone who wants the ski day to start without a car decision before coffee.
Protect one storm margin
Do not plan the first or last day like summer driving. Winter road timing can erase the relaxed San Juan feeling fast.
The Mountain
Purgatory's terrain is evenly split — 23% beginner, 51% intermediate, 26% advanced/expert. The resort is especially well-regarded for its intermediate cruisers and excellent beginner terrain, making it ideal for families and first-timers.
Expert terrain: The Legends area features the most challenging runs, including the steep and deep Engineer and Styx. Backcountry access is available through the Legends lift.
Ski season: Typically late November through early April. Peak powder season is January–February.
Getting There
Purgatory is just 25 miles north of Durango on US-550 — about a 30-minute drive. The base village has lodging, rentals, lessons, and several restaurants. Many visitors stay in Durango and commute daily (free parking at the resort). Note that US-550 can be icy in winter — allow extra time and consider all-season tires.
Purgatory ski choices
Decide whether Durango town time, family-friendly terrain, or a pure ski base leads the trip
Durango town time
Stay in town when restaurants, railroad atmosphere, and a livelier après base matter more than walking straight to the lift.
Family terrain
Let lessons, intermediate cruisers, and easy regrouping shape the mountain day. Purgatory is strongest when the group can stay together.
Pure ski base
Sleep closer to the resort when winter driving, early lessons, or gear-heavy mornings would make the commute annoying.
Tickets, maps, snow
Check Purgatory maps, tickets, snow, and lift status
Purgatory is friendlier than many Colorado resorts, but San Juan weather and US-550 conditions still matter. Check the live report before driving north from Durango.
