Durango packs more adventure per square mile than almost anywhere in Colorado — here's where to start.

Mountain Biking

Durango is a mountain biking legend — it hosted the first-ever Mountain Bike World Championships and produced multiple World Champions. Today the town has over 300 miles of trails within 30 minutes of downtown.

Top trails: Hermosa Creek Trail (17 miles, intermediate), Horse Gulch Trail System (downtown, beginner–advanced), Carbon Junction Trail (technical, expert), and the Animas Mountain Trail for panoramic town views.

Bike rentals: Hassle Free Sports, Mountain Bike Specialists, and Durango Cyclery all offer demos and rentals in town.

River Rafting & Kayaking

The Animas River runs right through the heart of Durango, offering everything from mellow flatwater floats to heart-pounding Class IV whitewater. Summer (June–August) is peak season when snowmelt keeps water levels high.

Guided rafting: Mild to Wild Rafting and Flexible Flyers Rafting offer half-day and full-day trips through Lower Animas (Class II–III) and the Upper Animas Gorge (Class IV–V).

Fly fishing: The Animas is a Gold Medal fishery — expect large browns and rainbows. Duranglers Fly Shop and Animas Valley Anglers lead guided fishing trips year-round.

Hiking

Durango is the jumping-off point for Colorado's largest wilderness area — the 500,000-acre Weminuche Wilderness. Hike to alpine lakes, summit 14ers, and explore the Continental Divide Trail.

Top day hikes: Crater Lake (6 miles RT, moderate), Potato Lake (4 miles RT, easy), Burnt Timber Trail, and Animas Mountain Trail for town views.

Backpacking: The Chicago Basin is world-class — four 14ers accessible from a single trailhead reached by the Narrow Gauge Railroad (get off at the Needleton stop).

Mesa Verde National Park

Just 35 miles west of Durango, Mesa Verde preserves over 4,000 ancient Ancestral Puebloan archaeological sites, including the iconic Cliff Palace — the largest cliff dwelling in North America.

Must-see: Cliff Palace Tour (ranger-led, requires tickets), Balcony House (adventurous ladder climb), Spruce Tree House (self-guided), and the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum.

Tips: Arrive early (before 9 AM) to beat crowds. Cliff Palace tours sell out — book online at recreation.gov weeks in advance. Budget 4–6 hours for the park.

📍 Distance from Durango: 35 miles west via US-160 — about 45 minutes. Combined with a Durango stay, Mesa Verde makes a perfect day trip or two-day itinerary.
