Main activity

Durango–Silverton railroad day

Book the railroad format first: full round trip, train up with bus return, or a Silverton overnight. That decision controls Saturday dinner and the hotel plan.

Mountain-first weekend

Best for a first Durango visit built around the railroad, with a separate return trip for Mesa Verde or Purgatory.

Use Friday for the historic core. Confirm Saturday boarding and parking, then choose a reservation dinner or a flexible brewpub meal within walking distance.

Give Animas Canyon and Silverton the full day.

Arrive at the depot when the ticket requires, carry layers and water, and avoid promising a fixed Durango dinner after the long round trip.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Return to the hotel before deciding on dinner.

Soot, sun, elevation, and a long seated day can flatten ambitious evening plans. Keep Steamworks or another downtown meal flexible unless the return time is certain.

Sunday

Use breakfast and the Animas River Trail before leaving town.

Carver Brewing can cover breakfast before a short river walk. Save Purgatory, Mesa Verde, and high-country trailheads for days with enough driving margin.
