Durango’s historic core keeps the depot, Main Avenue meals, and the Animas River close enough for a train-centered two-night stay.

Durango–Silverton railroad day

Book the railroad format first: full round trip, train up with bus return, or a Silverton overnight. That decision controls Saturday dinner and the hotel plan.

Mountain-first weekend

Best for a first Durango visit built around the railroad, with a separate return trip for Mesa Verde or Purgatory.

Arrive at the depot when the ticket requires, carry layers and water, and avoid promising a fixed Durango dinner after the long round trip.

Afternoon

Return to the hotel before deciding on dinner.

Soot, sun, elevation, and a long seated day can flatten ambitious evening plans. Keep Steamworks or another downtown meal flexible unless the return time is certain.
